During a full Panchakarma cleanse, the body is first oleated (massaged with oil externally and consuming ghee internally). This initial step helps to loosen ama from the deep tissues, preparing it for Swedana, which then liquefies and removes the toxins via sweat.

When oil application is combined with Swedana, the heat causes the pores to expand, allowing the large healing oil molecules to penetrate much deeper into the skin.
The oil moisturizes the skin as it penetrates deeper into the body, while sweating simultaneously hydrates the skin as it moves toward the surface. This synergistic interaction allows for maximum oil absorption and enhanced skin hydration. It is especially beneficial for those prone to dry skin (Vata Dosha).
