Pitta is the Inner Fire that Transforms

The Pitta Dosha – Pitta body type is a combination of the fire and water elements, and represents the principle of transformation, digestion, and metabolism. This dosha is responsible for body heat, food digestion (Agni), vision, and the processing of thoughts and emotions. Pitta types are natural leaders, full of energy, sharp focus, and passion.

The essence of Pitta is sharp intellect and efficiency, but excessive heat can easily lead to irritability and anger.

Pitta Characteristics: Athletic Body, Strong Will

Pitta Physical Characteristics (Prakriti):

  • Body type: medium, athletic, muscular build.
  • Heat Sensation: strong, fast metabolism, immense, regular hunger, warm body temperature, prone to excessive sweating.
  • Skin: oily, sensitive skin, prone to inflammation, rashes, and acne.
  • Hair: early graying hair or hair loss.

Pitta Mental and Emotional Characteristics:

  • Strengths: sharp-witted, logical, and rational. Excellent organizers, ambitious, and goal-oriented.
  • Challenges: In an imbalanced state, they become impatient, critical, and angry. They are prone to perfectionism and excessive control, which can lead to burnout.

An increase in Pitta signifies an increase in fire within the body. This hot and sharp quality causes inflammatory conditions, excessive acidity, and anger.

Maintaining Pitta Balance:

To pacify Pitta, cooling, moderation, and relaxation are most important.

  1. Diet: Pitta individuals should consume cooling, sweet, and bitter-tasting foods, such as melon, dark green vegetables, and rice. Avoid spicy, sour (vinegar, tomato, alcohol), and oily foods. The cooling sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes are most suitable.
  2. Lifestyle: Pitta individuals should seek activities that help with relaxation and stress relief (e.g., lakeside walks, swimming, meditation), but avoid excessive competition. It is important that Pitta individuals do not skip meals!
  3. Cooling: The use of coconut oil on the skin and head can help reduce internal heat.
