On January 14th, in the middle of winter, when most of us are simply awaiting the return of spring, one of the most important festivals in India is celebrated: Makar Sankranti. This is not merely a religious event, but also a tremendous energetic shift: the Sun enters Capricorn and begins its northern journey (Uttarayana).
As light once again triumphs over darkness, this period offers the perfect opportunity for us to prepare our body and mind for renewal.
Why is this important for your body according to Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the science of life, closely built upon the rhythms of nature. During Makar Sankranti, winter’s dark, cold, and dry energies (Vata dosha) gradually give way to increasing light and warmth. This transition is a particularly sensitive period for the body. The heaviness, lethargy, and possible mucus accumulation (Kapha dosha) that has built up during the winter months now begins to “melt,” but we must still handle our internal fire (Agni) carefully so that it does not suddenly weaken.
How can we support our body during the transition?
According to Ayurveda, during Makar Sankranti it is worth paying attention to the following:
- Lighter yet nourishing meals: Instead of winter’s heavy, fatty foods, let us transition to lighter, fresher, yet still warming and nourishing dishes. Khichdi (a one-pot dish made from mung beans and rice) is an excellent choice, as it is easily digestible yet provides strength. Avoid overly cold, raw foods and heavy desserts. Season generously with ginger, turmeric, and black pepper, which support Agni.
- Cleansing and detoxification: This is the ideal time to alleviate winter Kapha accumulation. Start the day with warm water in the morning, perhaps with ginger and lemon. Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil) stimulates circulation and helps eliminate toxins.
- Light for the soul: As the Sun embarks on its northern journey, it is time for us to “bring light” into our diet and thoughts. Spend more time outdoors, absorb the first rays of spring sunshine (and gather vitamin D!). Meditation and breathing exercises (pranayama) help awaken inner light and keep the mind clear.
- Movement and flexibility: Post-winter stiffness can be relieved with gentle yoga practices and walks in the fresh air. Movement stimulates lymphatic circulation and helps dispel winter drowsiness.
Makar Sankranti reminds us: as the Sun returns, it is time for us to start with a clean slate, releasing winter’s burdens. Eat your Khichdi, gather vitamin D, and let the Sun’s energy recharge you – both your body and soul will thank you!
